The Kids Are Back! Blue and Gold Classic on Shaw TV

Ron East, executive director of Football Manitoba, has confirmed with Shaw TV in Winnipeg that the 28th Annual Blue and Gold Classic will be televised on Shaw TV right across Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.

On Saturday, May 4, at 1:30 p.m. at East Side Eagles Field at 723 London Street in East Kildonan, the finest under-18 players  will be showcased in the televised version of the 28th annual Blue and Gold Classic. The game will be televised on delay on Saturday May 11 on Shaw TV right across the province of Manitoba and in Northwestern Ontario.

The Blue & Gold games of past years have produced an incredible list of football talent. Chicago Bears defensive tackle Israel Idonije played in the game. Edmonton Eskimos offensive lineman Kyle Koch and defensive linemen Eddie Steele and Ron Oramasionwu were both stars in the game. Chris Baumann of the Stampeders, former Blue Bomber Matt Sheridan and former Tiger Cat, Stampeder, and Eskimo Scott Coe all played in the Blue and Gold Games and all wore the black and gold of Team Manitoba.

Honorary coaches for this game include current Bombers Buck Pierce and Steve Morley and former Bombers Kelly Butler and Glenn Scrivener.

Chis Periera (55), Jayden McKoy (86), Xavier Glenn (31), Hayden Nellis (95), Salim Belrhazi (80) and the rest of Team Gold.

Shaw TV will telecast the second game of the May 4 doubleheader. The under-16 game kicks-off at 10:30 and the under-18 game starts at 1:30. Scott Taylor calling the play-by-play with John Makie adding the color commentary and Shaw’s own Mitch Clinton hosting the telecast.

Coach Makie

With Makie adding color and acting as an offensive coordinator in the game, we are likely to be treated to a television first. Plans are to have Makie call one of the teams’ offenses live on TV. The idea is to have Makie call each offensive play live and then explain and outline the play. If the technical aspects of this plan can be arranged, it will be a unique opportunity for football fans to get right down on the sidelines and watch a game being handled live by an O.C.

Last year’s game was tremendous on Shaw and this year will prove to be even better. The Shaw crew is fired up and the Under-18 coaches are ready to go. The players have been training hard all winter, the snow is melting (honest, it is) and the news conference for the event will be held at Buck’s Sports Lounge on May 1 at 11 a.m.

Tickets for both games are just $5 at the gate.
